INDORE, India, June 22 — The Crime Branch in Indore has arrested a law student for allegedly creating and selling fake NEET examination papers through Instagram, earning nearly ₹30,000 by misleading aspiring candidates, police said.
The accused, identified as Akshay Malviya, is a resident of the Lasudia area and a first-year law student. According to investigators, he used artificial intelligence tools, including ChatGPT, to generate fake question papers and marketed them through social media platforms.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajesh Kumar Tripathi said the accused charged buyers between ₹50 and ₹100 per paper and sold the documents to approximately 22 to 25 individuals.
“Akshay Malviya, a first-year law student who has completed Class 12, used ChatGPT to create fake NEET examination papers. He distributed these papers to around 22 to 23 people through Instagram, charging between ₹50 and ₹100 for each copy and earning approximately ₹25,000 to ₹30,000,” Tripathi told ANI.
“Since his actions caused confusion among candidates and involved creating fake examination papers for financial gain, a case has been registered against him,” he added.
Police said Malviya has been charged under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which relates to cheating and dishonestly inducing the delivery of property, as well as Section 66 of the Information Technology Act, which covers computer-related offenses involving dishonest or fraudulent intent.
According to Tripathi, the Crime Branch had been continuously monitoring social media platforms under directives from the Police Commissioner and had also received specific intelligence inputs regarding the activity.
He clarified that the fake papers had no connection to the actual NEET-UG 2026 examination conducted on Sunday.
The high-stakes National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG) 2026 re-examination was held across India and at 14 overseas centers on June 21.
According to the National Testing Agency (NTA), more than 2 million candidates appeared for the examination at 5,440 centers across India and 14 centers abroad. The test was conducted in 13 languages, including Hindi and English.
