CHHINDWARA, India, June 22 — At least six people were killed and about 20 others injured when a pickup vehicle carrying laborers collided with a truck in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhindwara district on Monday, officials said.
The accident occurred near Temni Khurd village on the Betul-Chhindwara Highway at around 10 a.m. local time.
Police and emergency responders rushed to the scene and transported the injured to Chhindwara District Hospital for treatment.
Civil Surgeon Dr. Sushil Dubey said hospital authorities immediately activated emergency arrangements after receiving information about the crash.
“Today, an accident occurred near Temni Khurd village on the Betul-Chhindwara Highway at around 10 a.m. Upon receiving information from the district administration, we immediately made arrangements at Chhindwara District Hospital,” Dubey said.
“So far, 20 patients have arrived here and are being treated. One patient is in critical condition and has been referred to Nagpur Medical College. In addition, six people have died, including four women and two men,” he added.
According to hospital officials, the deceased were identified as Babbu Rajbaitha, 35; Santosh Sawnere, 45; Savitri Banke, 31; Shivkali, 45; Leelavati Sheelu, 45; and Shakravarti Sheelu, 45. All were residents of Machhera village in Chhindwara district.
Dubey said all injured victims are receiving medical care at the district hospital, where police and district administration officials are coordinating relief efforts.
“A team of 20 to 25 doctors is engaged in treating the patients. Currently, 10 patients are in the female surgical ward, three in the surgical intensive care unit, four in orthopedics, and three in the general ward, including one patient with a crush injury,” he said.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed grief over the tragedy and announced financial assistance for the victims and their families.
Yadav said the state government would provide compensation of ₹400,000 to the families of each deceased victim, ₹100,000 to each seriously injured person, and ₹50,000 to those who sustained other injuries.
“The road accident near Temni Khurd on the Chhindwara-Betul National Highway is extremely tragic. My condolences are with the affected families,” Yadav said in a post on X.
“May Baba Mahakal grant peace to the departed souls and give strength to the bereaved families to bear this loss. I also pray for the speedy recovery of the injured,” he added.
