CHURU, Rajasthan, May 24 (ANI) — Normal life has been disrupted in Rajasthan’s Churu district as an intense heatwave pushed temperatures beyond the 44-degree Celsius mark, according to the regional weather department.
Local markets remained largely deserted as residents stayed indoors to escape the scorching heat. Those forced to step outside for essential work were seen relying on cold beverages to remain hydrated and cope with the extreme weather conditions.
Speaking to ANI, residents described the challenges posed by the soaring temperatures.
Nidhi Sharma, a local resident, said, “The heat in Churu is increasing day by day, and over the past few days it has become extremely intense with scorching winds. Stepping outside the house has become very difficult.”
“As everyone knows, Churu experiences extreme temperatures in both summer and winter. In winter, temperatures fall below zero, while summers are unbearably hot. To cope, we mostly stay indoors and consume cold drinks such as juices, buttermilk, and curd,” she added.
Another resident, Hanuman Sharma, pointed to the lack of public facilities to help people deal with the heat.
“Today is particularly severe. I just came from outside and am drenched in sweat. Even animals and birds are struggling,” he said.
“Unfortunately, there are no public facilities in the city to provide cooling arrangements or even drinking water. Fans and coolers are failing to provide relief, and while we consume buttermilk and other cold beverages, they do not seem to help much,” he added.
Nandita Sharma, who was visiting Churu from Kolkata, described the conditions as overwhelming.
“What can I say about Churu’s heat? It’s famous,” she said.
“I came from Kolkata, but Churu is my hometown. The heat is beyond words. We have stopped eating outside food and are relying on homemade drinks such as buttermilk, lemon soda, and lassi. Going to the market during the afternoon is out of the question because of the intense ‘loo’ (hot winds) we have been experiencing over the past few days,” she added.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heatwave conditions are very likely to persist across Rajasthan from May 24 to May 30.
The IMD has also forecast severe heatwave conditions in isolated areas of western Rajasthan during the same period.
The weather department further noted that heatwave conditions have already prevailed in several regions, including Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha. (ANI)
