New York [US], June 24 (ANI): United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the ceasefire between Iran and Israel on Monday and called on both nations to respect the agreement fully, emphasizing the urgent need to end the violence that has claimed numerous lives and destabilized the region.
In a post on X, Guterres said, “I very much welcome President Trump’s announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. I urge the two countries to respect it fully. The fighting must stop. The people of the two countries have already suffered too much. It is my sincere hope that this ceasefire can be replicated in the other conflicts in the region.”
Earlier in the day, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed deep dissatisfaction with the renewed tensions, accusing both sides of violating the ceasefire he had brokered just hours prior. On his Truth Social platform, Trump said the conflict had reached a point where “they don’t know what the f** they’re doing anymore.”*
He issued direct warnings to Israel, stating, “ISRAEL. DO NOT DROP THOSE BOMBS. IF YOU DO IT IS A MAJOR VIOLATION. BRING YOUR PILOTS HOME, NOW!” In a separate post, he added, “ISRAEL is not going to attack Iran. All planes will turn around and head home, while doing a friendly ‘Plane Wave’ to Iran. Nobody will be hurt, the Ceasefire is in effect!”
Despite the ceasefire announcement, tensions quickly reignited. According to The Times of Israel, Iran launched missile strikes into Israel, killing four civilians in Beersheba and wounding several more in a residential building attack. This act occurred just hours after Tehran had targeted U.S. military installations in the Middle East, including the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar—the largest American base in the region.
The conflict originally erupted on June 13, when Israel launched “Operation Rising Lion,” a comprehensive airstrike campaign targeting Iranian military and nuclear facilities. Iran retaliated with “Operation True Promise 3,” a drone and missile campaign aimed at Israeli jet fuel depots and energy infrastructure.
Escalation continued when the United States conducted precision airstrikes on three critical Iranian nuclear sites under “Operation Midnight Hammer.” In response, Iran launched further attacks on U.S. military bases in Qatar and Iraq.
With the situation at a fragile juncture, the ceasefire brokered by Trump appeared to offer a brief respite. The UN chief’s appeal for restraint underscored international hopes that the temporary truce could evolve into a lasting peace and serve as a model for other volatile regions.
