New Delhi [India], April 15 (ANI): Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri met US Ambassador Sergio Gor on Wednesday to discuss the growing energy partnership between the two nations, with a focus on enhancing strategic cooperation and ensuring long-term energy stability.
In a post on X, the US ambassador highlighted the significance of the engagement, stating, “Great meeting with Minister Hardeep Singh Puri to advance the US-India energy partnership. We discussed strengthening energy security and unlocking new opportunities for accelerating growth.” He added that expanding access to reliable American energy would deepen economic ties and support long-term energy security and diversification for both countries.
Responding to the meeting, Puri expressed satisfaction with the progress of the discussions held at his office.
“Very happy to receive US Ambassador Sergio Gor in my office today. We held productive discussions on bilateral energy cooperation and explored ways to further strengthen our comprehensive energy relationship,” he said.
The push for a stronger US-India partnership comes as India reaffirmed its broader strategy of maintaining a flexible energy policy. On Wednesday, the government reiterated that it continues to source oil from diversified suppliers to safeguard its energy security amid evolving global market conditions and regional instability.
This position was outlined during an inter-ministerial briefing addressing the volatile situation in West Asia. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “We continue to buy oil from diversified sources, keeping in mind the energy security needs of 1.4 billion people, the current situation in the international market, and the global situation we have to deal with.”
Beyond sourcing strategies, the government is closely monitoring key maritime routes critical for energy imports. Jaiswal noted that India is in discussions with multiple countries regarding the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, particularly focusing on the safety of Indian vessels.
“We are trying to ensure that our remaining ships there also return safely,” he said, emphasizing the government’s priority to protect Indian maritime assets amid regional tensions.
The importance of the region has grown as shipping through the Strait of Hormuz—one of the world’s most vital trade routes—faces disruptions. The ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran has affected movement through the waterway, raising concerns about global energy supply stability.
At the highest diplomatic level, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also discussed the West Asia situation during a recent phone call with US President Donald Trump. According to the MEA, the Prime Minister emphasized the need to keep the Strait of Hormuz open and secure while reviewing broader bilateral ties.
These diplomatic efforts remain crucial as tensions in the region continue to strain international supply chains. (ANI)
