“What a terrible thing for democracy!”: Trump decries BBC executives over reports of doctoring speech

US President Donald Trump

Washington, DC [US], November 10 (ANI): US President Donald Trump lashed out at top BBC executives who resigned following reports that his 2021 speech had been tampered with. Calling his address from January 2021 “good” and “perfect,” Trump described the alleged alteration as “a terrible thing for democracy.”

In a post on Truth Social, the president said, “The top people in the BBC, including Tim Davie, the boss, are all quitting/fired because they were caught ‘doctoring’ my very good (perfect!) speech of January 6th. Thank you to The Telegraph for exposing these corrupt ‘journalists.’ These are very dishonest people who tried to step on the scales of a presidential election. On top of everything else, they are from a foreign country, one that many consider our number one ally. What a terrible thing for democracy!”

Two top executives at the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) resigned on Sunday amid an escalating scandal over impartiality and bias, CNN reported. Director-General Tim Davie and the chief executive of the news division, Deborah Turness, both stepped down following the leak of a memo that revealed the BBC had misleadingly edited a speech by Trump to make it appear he had directly called for violence on January 6, 2021.

According to CNN, which cited the BBC, Davie announced his resignation in a note to staff on Sunday afternoon, saying his decision was “entirely my own.” Turness, in a statement on the BBC website, said, “The ongoing controversy around the Panorama on President Trump has reached a stage where it is causing damage to the BBC — an institution that I love.”

“While mistakes have been made, I want to be absolutely clear that recent allegations that BBC News is institutionally biased are wrong,” she added.

CNN reported that the resignations followed an internal whistleblowing memo obtained by The Telegraph, which revealed that the BBC had broadcast a “doctored” Trump speech that made it seem as though he had encouraged Capitol Hill rioters by saying he would walk with them to “fight like hell.”

In reality, Trump said during his January 6, 2021 address in Washington, DC, “We’re going to walk down to the Capitol, and we’re going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women,” CNN noted.

Citing the leaked memo, CNN said the documentary made the US president appear to have said things he never actually did by splicing together footage. (ANI)
