Washington, April 29 (ANI): Britain’s King Charles III underscored the importance of the transatlantic alliance and NATO during a White House state dinner, highlighting the enduring strength of the United States-United Kingdom partnership.
Speaking at the formal dinner hosted by President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, the King reflected on the two nations’ shared history, tracing their cooperation back to World War II.
He noted that during the war, American leadership played a decisive role in defending freedom in Europe and helping rebuild a devastated continent.
“During World War II, at a most critical time in the darkest days of the 20th century, American leadership helped rebuild a shattered continent, playing a decisive role as a defender of freedom in Europe,” the King said.
King Charles emphasized that the alliance forged in wartime ultimately led to the creation of NATO in 1949 and continues to serve as a cornerstone of global security.
Turning to current geopolitical tensions, he highlighted the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and said both the United Kingdom and the United States must remain committed to supporting Kyiv as the war with Russia continues.
He also stressed that NATO and the AUKUS security partnership between the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia remain essential for maintaining stability in an increasingly uncertain global environment.
“We, and I shall never forget that, not least as freedom is again under attack following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine today, our partnerships in NATO and AUKUS deepen our technological and military cooperation,” he said.
The remarks come amid renewed debate over NATO commitments and earlier comments by President Trump suggesting possible reassessments of the United States’ role in the alliance.
During the event, King Charles also presented President Trump with a ceremonial bell from a former Royal Navy submarine as a symbolic gesture of shared history and military cooperation.
“I am delighted to present to you, as a personal gift, the original bell which hung on the conning tower of your valiant namesake,” the King said. “May it stand as a testament to our nations’ shared history and shining future.”
Adding a light moment to the formal occasion, he remarked, “Should you ever need to get hold of us, just give us a ring.” (ANI)
