New Delhi, April 29 (ANI): Ecuador’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility, Gabriela Sommerfeld Rosero, arrived in New Delhi early Wednesday for a three-day official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties between India and Ecuador.
Welcoming her arrival, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the visit is expected to further deepen cooperation between the two countries.
During her visit, Sommerfeld is scheduled to hold talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to explore avenues for collaboration across key sectors.
She will also pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat and is expected to meet Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, and Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita.
The visit follows diplomatic engagements over the past year and signals momentum toward a potential trade agreement between the two countries.
Discussions are expected to focus on expanding economic and strategic cooperation, including increasing Ecuador’s imports of Indian pharmaceuticals and exploring partnerships in advanced healthcare systems.
Talks may also cover collaboration in digital infrastructure, with Ecuador showing interest in adopting systems similar to India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI), as well as cooperation in artificial intelligence.
With Ecuador holding significant reserves of copper and silver, both sides are also likely to explore supply chain partnerships to support India’s high-tech and electric vehicle sectors.
The visit comes months after India opened a new embassy in Quito in November 2025. Officials expect the discussions to serve as part of ongoing engagements under the Joint Economic Committee framework, with both sides exploring a Preferential Trade Agreement.
For India, Ecuador is viewed as a strategic gateway to the Andean region, offering access to broader Latin American markets.
In addition to official meetings, Sommerfeld is expected to promote Ecuador’s tourism potential, including its Andean and Amazon regions as well as the Galápagos Islands, to the Indian film industry, highlighting incentives for international productions. (ANI)
