NEW DELHI, June 23 (ANI) — External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Tuesday paid tribute to the victims of the Air India Flight 182 ‘Kanishka’ bombing on its 41st anniversary and reaffirmed India’s commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms.
Taking to social media platform X, Jaishankar said India remembers those who lost their lives in the tragic incident and remains resolute in its stand against terrorism.
“Today, on the 41st anniversary of Air India 182 ‘Kanishka’ bombing, we honour the memory of those who lost their precious lives in this horrific terror incident. Reaffirm our commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations,” he said.
The Air India Flight 182 bombing, which took place on June 23, 1985, remains one of the deadliest aviation terror attacks in history. The Boeing 747, operating on the Montreal–London–Delhi route, was destroyed mid-air at an altitude of 9,400 metres.
All 329 passengers and crew on board were killed when the aircraft exploded over the Atlantic Ocean while flying through Irish airspace.
The attack is widely attributed to Canada-based Khalistani extremist group Babbar Khalsa and remains the deadliest mass casualty incident in Canadian history.
Commemorative events are held annually by India’s High Commission in Ottawa and its consulates in Toronto and Vancouver, where families of victims and members of the Indian diaspora gather to pay tribute.
More than four decades later, India, Canada, and Ireland continue to remember the victims of the tragedy, which also led to significant changes in global aviation security protocols.
