WASHINGTON, June 23 (ANI) — A Washington Post investigation has raised questions about the political independence of former U.S. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, alleging long-term contacts between her and associates linked to the Science of Identity Foundation.
The report, which cites more than 25,000 pages of internal documents and emails provided by former campaign worker Rebecca Saltzburg, claims that individuals connected to the Hawaii-based group founded by Chris Butler may have influenced aspects of Gabbard’s messaging and political strategy.
According to the investigation, materials reviewed suggest that Butler’s associates worked with Gabbard’s advisers on public messaging, policy positions, and legislative planning during her time in Congress.
The report points to similarities between internal documents and Gabbard’s later legislative actions, including an email directive that encouraged action against countries whose citizens joined Islamic State fighters. Gabbard introduced a related bill in Congress roughly a week later, the report said.
Other documents allegedly provided messaging guidance on foreign policy issues, including Syria, with arguments that later appeared in Gabbard’s public statements and congressional remarks.
The Washington Post also reported that social media accounts linked to supporters of Butler were active in promoting and defending Gabbard’s political career.
Chris Butler, founder of the Science of Identity Foundation, has long been a controversial figure, with former members describing the organization as highly hierarchical. Critics have alleged that Butler exercised strong influence over followers and expressed hostile views toward U.S. intelligence and defense institutions.
Former associates quoted in the report made additional claims about Butler’s alleged ambitions and influence, while the foundation and its supporters have previously denied such characterizations.
Gabbard’s spokesperson rejected the allegations cited in the investigation.
The report also noted internal political tensions following Gabbard’s departure from her intelligence role, including broader restructuring efforts within the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI).
According to CNN reporting cited in the article, senior officials under acting DNI leadership have begun reviewing workforce reductions and internal reorganizations, though details and final decisions remain unclear.
The restructuring has drawn concern from some lawmakers, who warned that large-scale cuts could affect the agency’s ability to carry out its national security mission.
The developments come amid ongoing political debate in Washington over intelligence community leadership and the future structure of the ODNI.
