Afghanistan: At least 5 killed, 143 injured as powerful earthquake hits Samangan province

Injured people were taken to hospital for treatment following the powerful earthquake in Afghanistan

Kabul [Afghanistan], November 3 (ANI): At least five people were killed and 143 others were injured after a powerful earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck several provinces across Afghanistan late Monday night, according to the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA).

In a statement posted on X, ANDMA said the quake occurred around 1 am local time and shook multiple regions across the northwestern, central, western, northern, northeastern, and eastern parts of the country. Preliminary assessments indicate that the epicentre was located in Samangan province, which suffered the majority of casualties and damage.

“According to initial information, Samangan province was the epicentre of this earthquake, and so far, five people have been martyred and 143 injured, most of whom have been transferred to their homes after treatment,” the authority stated.

ANDMA also reported financial losses in the affected areas, though the full extent of damage has yet to be determined. “Additionally, financial losses have also occurred in the mentioned areas, the full details of which will be shared later,” the agency said, adding that it has coordinated with provincial and district officials to ensure an immediate response and relief operations.

According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at a depth of 23 kilometres. “EQ of M: 6.3, On: 03/11/2025 01:59:02 IST, Lat: 36.51 N, Long: 67.50 E, Depth: 23 Km, Location: Afghanistan,” the NCS reported in a post on X.

CNN reported that tremors were also felt in parts of Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan — three countries bordering northern Afghanistan.

This latest quake follows a 6.0-magnitude earthquake in eastern Afghanistan in September, which killed more than 1,400 people and injured over 3,000, with most casualties reported in Kunar province. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), that quake’s epicentre was in the Kama district of Nangarhar province, near the Pakistan border, directly affecting around 12,000 people.

Afghanistan lies in a seismically active region and frequently experiences earthquakes, particularly in the Hindu Kush mountain range. (ANI)
