Delhi: India, Australia Hold 7th Round of Dialogue on Disarmament, Non-Proliferation

New Delhi [India], August 12 (ANI): The 7th round of the India-Australia Dialogue on Disarmament, Non-Proliferation, and Export Control was held Tuesday in New Delhi, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement.

The two sides discussed developments in nuclear, chemical, and biological disarmament and non-proliferation, outer space security, conventional weapons—including artificial intelligence in the military domain—and multilateral export control regimes.

According to the MEA, the dialogue enhanced mutual understanding and appreciation of national perspectives and global developments on non-proliferation and disarmament issues, contributing to the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

The Indian delegation was led by Muanpuii Saiawi, Joint Secretary (Disarmament and International Security Affairs), MEA, while the Australian side was headed by Vanessa Wood, Ambassador for Arms Control and Counter-Proliferation, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

The previous round of the dialogue was held virtually on March 30, 2021, where the two sides discussed contemporary issues of mutual interest in nuclear, chemical, and biological disarmament and non-proliferation, conventional weapons, outer space security, and strategic export control.

Meanwhile, Australian Army Chief Lt. General Simon Stuart arrived in New Delhi for an official visit. On Monday, he met with senior leadership of the Indian Armed Forces.

On Wednesday, he will travel to Agra to visit the 50 (Independent) Parachute Brigade—also known as the Shatrujeet Brigade—a specialized airborne formation of the Indian Army headquartered in Agra.

The brigade is known for its rapid deployment capabilities and operates directly under the command of the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO). It comprises airborne battalions, artillery batteries, a field hospital, and signal and engineer units, making it a self-contained, highly mobile force.
