Islamabad [Pakistan], August 3 (ANI): The death toll from rain-related incidents across Pakistan has surged to 299, up from an earlier figure of 234, according to data released by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), as reported by Dawn.
The monsoon season, which began in late June, continues to wreak havoc across the country, bringing both essential rainfall and devastating consequences. While these rains help replenish reservoirs and provide relief from the summer heat, they also routinely trigger deadly floods, landslides, and widespread displacement—especially in areas with inadequate infrastructure or high population density.
The NDMA data, cited by state-run PTV News, reports that of the 299 deceased, 140 were children, 102 were men, and 57 were women. Additionally, 715 people have been injured in rain-related incidents since June 26. The injured include 239 children, 204 women, and 272 men.
In addition to the human toll, the flooding has inflicted heavy damage on property and livestock. A total of 1,676 homes have been damaged, of which 562 were completely destroyed. Some 428 livestock animals have also perished due to the flooding.
Rescue and relief operations remain underway. Authorities have evacuated 2,880 individuals from affected regions and distributed over 13,000 relief items. These include 1,999 tents, 958 blankets, 569 quilts, 1,282 kitchen sets, 1,163 food packs, 1,122 hygiene kits, 2,170 tarpaulins, 146 de-watering pumps, and other essential supplies.
Looking ahead, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast further rainfall and thunderstorms in the northern and central parts of the country between August 4 and August 7. Rain is expected across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Islamabad during this period. Rainfall in Pakistan-occupied Gilgit-Baltistan is expected to begin on August 5.
Meanwhile, Balochistan is likely to experience mostly hot and humid conditions, though northeastern and southern parts may receive some rainfall on August 6. Sindh will also remain largely hot and humid, with the possibility of light rain along its coastal areas, according to Dawn. (ANI)
