Parliament Monsoon Session: Lok Sabha adjourned until 11 am on July 22

Ruckus in Lok Sabha as Opposition MPs resort to sloganeering

New Delhi [India], July 21 (ANI): The Lok Sabha was adjourned on Monday until 11 am on July 22 after repeated disruptions, with opposition leaders demanding the opportunity to speak and pressing for a discussion on Operation Sindoor and the Pahalgam terror attack.

The House, which convened at 11 am on Monday, was initially adjourned until 4 pm due to constant sloganeering from the Opposition. When it resumed at 4 pm, the uproar continued, forcing another adjournment until Tuesday morning.

Earlier in the day, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla expressed disappointment over the disruptions and urged members to allow debate and discussion in accordance with rules. “This is the Question Hour and the government is willing to discuss every issue. The House should run, and there should be discussion on every issue according to the rules and procedures,” he said.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh assured the House that the government was fully prepared for discussion on any issue. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju also appealed for order, stating, “A meeting of the Business Advisory Committee will be held at 1430 hours to decide on the agenda to be discussed. The government is ready for discussion, but they (Opposition MPs) are protesting here in the Well of the House. It is not right to protest like this on the first day of the Monsoon Session.”

Following the adjournment, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi criticised the government for not allowing the Opposition to speak. “The question is — the Defence Minister is allowed to speak in the House, but Opposition members, including me, who is the LoP, are not allowed to speak. This is a new approach. The convention states that if people from the government side can speak, then we should also be given space to speak,” he said.

Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra added, “If they (the government) are ready for discussion, they should let the Leader of the Opposition speak. He has stood up to speak, so he should be allowed to speak.”

Meanwhile, BJP MP Baijayant Panda tabled in Lok Sabha the Report of the Select Committee on the Income Tax Bill, 2025, which contains 285 recommendations to modernise the six-decade-old legislation. (ANI)
